Our Adoption Requirements

We use and REQUIRE that any guinea pig adopted from us is to be kept INDOORS. Also we require the use of C&C Cages (Cubes & Coroplast) Because store bought cages are too small.

We do REQUIRE a $25 adoption fee, To Help cover the costs of running a rescue.

We would rather you adopted a pair of guinea pigs, Guinea Pigs are herd animals and should have a cagemate. But, EXCEPTION if you are adopting a friend for a guinea pig you already have.

We REQUIRE an adoption application to be filled out and submitted to us. Please give us a few days to get back to you on your application. Please research guinea pigs before you decide to adopt. A guinea pig can be one of the most endearing and wonderful pets. They may live as long as 9 years (the average is 5 to 7), so the decision to bring one into your home must be made carefully.

We DO NOT adopt out our guinea pigs as presents. They are to be cherished pets and possible adopters must know that they live 5-7 years. Please make sure you are going to be taking care of your guinea pig for their whole lifetime.

REQUIRED ITEMS BEFORE ADOPTING

  • A C&C Cage Cavy Cages Detailed Instructions on making one.
  • Kiln-dried pine shavings, fleece, or carefresh bedding
  • Pellets (no seeds, nuts, or treats) Oxbow Pellets
  • 32-oz water bottles
  • TIMOTHY HAY (Very Important) Oxbow Timothy Hay
  • Food Bowls/Dishes
  • Hidey Houses Cavy Cages They have inexpensive ways to make your own hidey houses. (1 Per Guinea Pig)

    • Time For Adoption

    Once the adopter has made all the necessary preparations for their chosen guinea pig/pigs a day will be picked when both the rescue and the adopter are available. The rescue is run out of the home, so a date will have to be chosen.

    Once the adopters arrive at the Rescue we will have them meet the piggies, interact with them. Also during this time we will have an education visit. Where will will further discuss grooming, nail care, etc.

    Piggie Lovers Inc. Guinea Pig Rescue will then make sure the adopter has made all preparations, such as correct cage size, enough supplies, etc, and the adoption contract will then be signed. The adopter will pay the adoption fee ($25.00 per guinea pig). We will also hand out pamplets from Guinea Lynx And answer any questions that they might have. Then the adopter can take home their guinea pig/pigs and start their life together.

    We REQUIRE a FOLLOW-UP email or phone call. We would like to know how the guinea pig/pigs are adjusting to their new home. Preferably within the first month of adopting. If you have any questions about the guinea pigs, please just ask.

    We REQUIRE if you can no longer care for the guinea pigs that you have adopted from PLIGPR that you must return them to the rescue or we can arrange to have them brought back. We do not want them taken to a shelter or other location.
